JET#0 - Hello & Welcome
Thank you for landing here, firstly you can call me Jet and like many I’ve been interested in tech since I was a kid. In high-school I’d spend hours in the computer room offering to help peers with their computer classwork just so I can spend more time around those gorgeous big boxes (I once loved the stuff).
While my career counsellor suggested a career in Hotel Management, which I tried to study for about a year. After unenrolling from Hospitality I saw a flyer on a noticeboard for digital publishing, and since I was highly skilled at forging certificates in my high school publishing classes I enrolled. I truly enjoyed embarking on the creative path, though I couldn’t afford the hardware and software for graphics units; so I chose to pivot into IT.
I’ve now been in IT & Cybersecurity for roughly 25+ years and have started in sales, hardware repair to supporting businesses and end-users. I learnt a lot but as of 2018 I started to feel a sense of overwhelm, the joy and love I once had in the 80’s, 90’s & early 00’s just wasn’t there anymore; it felt like all of it was for the $$$ and at the same time it was all expanding way too quickly. I’ve always been a lifelong learning advocate, but after a while it gets tiring and if you’re not putting 2+ hours a night learning new technical skills you’d reach dinosaur status in no time. I wanted to spend my evenings exploring different areas outside of computing. Longing to bring back that curious creative side from my childhood where tech was the tool that helped me, not the other way around where I'm the tool to help the tech industry.
But I ignored the feeling, I thought suck it up and just keep going. When COVID hit we all had more time on my hands, so I began to daydream and reflect on a time before the iPhone (pre-2008). I still had a mobile & PDA (Personal Data Assistant) that I was using alongside my desktop PC for home, and laptop for work. Back then other than that most my other stuff was analog. I decided to consolidate the devices with a Palm Treo that served as my phone and organizer which I’d sync to my PC via USB cable every night. It was basic, it made Calls, SMS, ICQ, Calendar, Tasks, Contacts & Notes with limited web surfing and everything else was done on the PC.
Years passed and it all kind of got put on the back burner yet again. Fast forward to 2025 and that itch has gotten louder and cannot be ignored. The tech noise is insane, and I really needed a way to detox from all the apps, subscriptions and devices.
These writings are part of my journey I’m taking with the hope that some tips will help others out there disconnect, work differently and live a digitally simpler life. If you’re feeling overwhelmed with all the tech madness you’ve come to the right place. As I've struggled to find clarity mentally, I'm hoping that my words on a page can both help me discover peace in the digital chaos, as well as help others.
